SEO Whitepaper Controversy

One thing I've learned from doing business with highly intelligent, technically savvy, opinionated people is that you need to:

1) have thick skin
2) be open to dialogues - because you might learn something!

In a most recent example, we sent our whitepaper "The Marketers' Guide to Search Engine Optimization" this week to our paid bloggers. And wow, did we hear back from them! (Check out the most recent posts here.)

One of the most scathing responses, from Robin Good, prompted me to send his blog to our SEO partners, Anvil Media.

I'm taking advantage of this immediate medium to post responses to his criticisms, and continue the dialogue.

As a marketer, this kind of immediate, public feedback is both exhilirating and terrifying. As a business person, what we do with the information gleaned can make our solutions (and marketing material to support them) much stronger, if we are willing to listen and talk...

So here's our opportunity to speak:

Firing up the imagination

A wise man once told me that people lose their creativity when they're about four years old. At the ripe old age of 17, that made me profoundly sad. Here I am, thirty years later, wondering still whether it isn't true?

For example, I see smart, accomplished marketers paying more attention to metrics and measurement than pushing creatively into new territories. And when I do see true creativity, I'm stopped still in my tracks.

In an age where technology has freed us from the drudgery of our forebearers, why aren't we firing up our imaginations and letting them take us to new territories?

I make my living in front of a screen and on the phone, largely. The closest I get to nature (from a condo in downtown Portland, Oregon) is through watching hummingbirds bob and weave around a feeder I've put right outside the window that I face.

Unfortunately, (like many others) my imagination is mostly stretched these days by incredible weather and earth forces that jolt the world. And by the horrors I see carried out in war-torn and hunger-ravaged countries.

What do I do to improve my creativity? I saw a pretty amazing movie yesterday that I think everyone should see: Finding Neverland. It gives me hope that imagination (and the appreciation of it) is not dead. Go see it!

You're going to hear from the people of Marqui in this blog. I'm hopeful that we'll provide you with creative ideas and recommendations to stretch your imaginations. I'm convinced that our bloggers (if you read them) will stretch ideas and tell stories that will fuel many interesting debates.

This will be a big ride. I hope to have a huge smile on my face and my hair on fire when we get to the other side.

Marqui blog? Mmhh.. Welcome!

Hi there! I was thinking about what to write for this first post. I considered the typical "Welcome to. .. blah blah blah.." but then it came to me the same question I've been pondering since I started configuring this service: what is the Marqui goal of having its own blog? I thought that the answer was obvious, but is it? We currently have our paid bloggers program, that seems to be doing pretty well. Congratulations for that! But a local blog opens other posibilities that not necessarily matches that program, which is sort of an external view of our product. A local blog would be our own view not only of the product, but also about Marqui's social mood. Very interesting.. I guess we will have to find out these goals as we start traveling this path. What do you think should be the main goal of this blog? Should everybody in Marqui have access to it? Should everybody be posting regularly? Anyway, too long already. Let's start playing with this thing Esteban MarquiOne - the designated adminsitrator
